A total of 34 individuals will be recognised with national medals during this year’s International Women’s Day celebrations scheduled for March 8, 2026 at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds.
The ceremony, which will be presided over by President Museveni, forms part of the 42nd national commemoration of the global event in Uganda.
According to a list seen by Nile Post, the majority of the honourees are women, with 30 female recipients expected to receive medals in recognition of their service and contribution to the country.
Among the honours to be awarded are the National Independence Diamond Jubilee Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal and the Honorary Medal, which are given to individuals who have demonstrated commitment and outstanding service to the nation.
The list indicates that 18 of the awardees will receive the National Independence Diamond Jubilee Medal, one of Uganda’s notable state decorations.
Members of the security forces are also among those to be recognised during the ceremony. Six officers from the Uganda Police Force, five from the Uganda Prisons Service and five from the Uganda People's Defence Forces will be decorated for their service.
The celebrations will be held under the theme “Scaling up Investment to Accelerate Access to Justice for All Women and Girls in Uganda.”
One of the key highlights of the event will be an all-female parade staged by the country’s security forces.
The Director of Women’s Affairs in the Uganda People’s Defence Forces, Brigadier-General Charity Bainababo, is overseeing preparations for the parade and band performance.
Speaking recently during an interview at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds, Bainababo expressed confidence that the parade team is ready for the occasion.
“We are rehearsing as ladies because this year’s parade is all ladies, only ladies. I have been watching their rehearsals and overseeing them, and they are ready. We will give you a marvelous show,” she said.
International Women’s Day is marked annually to celebrate the achievements of women while drawing attention to the need for continued progress in gender equality across social, economic and political spaces.
